Trucker Ben Jones ekes out a living delivering packages to locals sparsely scattered throughout Utah’s desert. (Only a certain breed chooses to hole up in an aluminum trailer in the middle of hot, dry nowhere—the sort who communicate their pasts with “a thick slice of silence.”) Happening upon a nude woman playing cello in an abandoned house, Ben becomes entangled in a plot connected to a violent crime that once took place at the Desert Diner. An intelligent, poetic noir thriller packed with wise and witty observations that will endear you to Ben and his ever-multiplying predicaments. —Amanda

In this impressive debut novel, we follow the adventures and love lives of a smuggler boss who is also the leading light of the local cabaret, a government spy turned double agent and a burlesque star with a sideline in the black market. The setting is a confederacy of four invented nation-states reminiscent of glamorous 1920s Europe on the cusp of a fascist party’s rise. Amberlough is a bold alternate history, a glittering hedonistic romp, a spy thriller and a political parable highly relevant for 2017. —Tara

Literary fiction readers: Grushin is an author to watch. This, her third novel, traces the life-arc of a Russian-born poet who immigrates to America to refine her craft. As she ages, we see the effects that decisions, circumstances and the other subtle machinations of life have on creative identity. Structuring the story is a series of forty rooms (the average number of interior spaces we occupy in our lives); Grushin uses the metaphor to reflect on domesticity, female experience, art and much more. A hauntingly beautiful read. —Kaya

How much is your happiness worth? In this slim novel, Swedish author Karlsson imagines an initiative that calculates the “Experienced Happiness” (E.H.) of each person in the world. Those who have experienced greater than average happiness must pay into a fund which will be redistributed to those who have experienced less happiness. Our protagonist has been assessed with a massive E.H. bill, which vastly exceeds his earnings as a part-time video store employee. This modern parable is gently satirical and thought-provoking. —Tara
