So-so. I found many of the characters too one dimensional and the descriptions very over blown at times.

This goes in my light & fluffy category. It didn’t really live up to its title. The secret orphan aspect didn’t come into the story until the last quarter of the book. The book is really all about Elenor’s life. Simple characters, simple writing, but I was still able to get some entertainment from it.

The writing greatly lacks sophistication.

This process is soooo frustrating. I just pushed something wrong and canceled a book I had been waiting on for almost two months. This site is very difficult to use.

4 stars. I found this an easy and interesting read. Escaping an unhappy life as a skivvy to her misogynistic and slovenly brothers, Elenor goes to Coventry to help out her sick Aunt. When she gets there, her Aunt takes her in hand and gives her love. Her Aunt has a housekeeper, Victoria, with a young daughter, Rose, who Elenor takes to. Rose's parents don't display any affection for Rose and Elenor becomes close to her. When Elenor's brothers die in WWII, Elenor inherits the farm in Cornwall. When Coventry is bombed, Rose is brought to the farm. While there, a secret about Rose is brought to light and Elenor and her Canadian pilot Jackson have to try to protect the girl against danger and rumours. A good read.

I’ve read several World War II novels recently, several about the resistance women. Some of them are hard to read because of the tragedy and violence they contain. The Secret Orphan is a lot easier to read and, although it contains some suspense, it is a story of love between a lovable orphan, her legal guardian and the pilot she loves. Although it is. Not based on a true story, the author paints a picture of really believable characters. Reads quickly.
