This novel has all the ingredients for needed for a stellar read – complex characters, glamour and a historical setting (1940s-1950s) but it didn’t quite gel for me. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I think it was really because I wasn’t particularly interested in the main characters. I didn’t like Tom or Diana and I eagerly awaited the stories of the supporting characters like Jillie and Ned. I found the ending contrived and sappy.
