Jamie Schwartz is not the most popular kid at his all-boys boarding school. Disconnected from fellow students and teachers, he believes he is destined to play Holden Caulfield, the main character from The Catcher in the Rye, and has adapted the book as play. After a series of altercations with the boys at school, Jamie runs away to search for J.D. Salinger. On his way he picks up Deedee Gorlin, a quirky townie. Their odyssey to find Salinger becomes a journey of sexual awakening.

Suckered by the association of the classic book title, but just a run of the mill coming of age story, one that was less inspiring that a few, if not numerous, misfit teens I had known (and yes, I took Drama in High School.) Other than the mystic of Salinger and Catcher in the Rye, critics love it as a period piece, teen love and the New England landscape???

No subtitles (for deaf & hearing impaired) so we were unable to watch, thus unable to rate. Too bad.

My rating is for those who have read "Catcher in the Rye" and those somewhat familiar with the "reclusive" J. D. Salinger. In the days and years that "Rye" was new, fans everywhere were looking for the next big novel by Salinger, but it never came. Sorta' like their experience with "To Kill a Mockingbird." For whatever mysterious reason, these authors never really have much new to say once they have issued their masterpiece. Whatever was true in the film, it was good to imagine once again that Salinger would give us further masterpieces of literature to enjoy.

Sir, I've had such a rough time in school. And The Catcher in the Rye just found me at the right time.
But don't you believe in the Bible where it says it's the role of the parent to raise the child into maturity and then let them go into the world? I mean, don't you believe The Catcher in the Rye has matured and then it's time to let it go into the world?
-No, that is a terrible analogy. The Catcher in the Rye never grows old. Phoebe and Holden are eternally the same young age.
Salinger said to us was, "Why didn't you write?" I can never be Holden.
Well, I'm really happy the way it turned out.
Well, do you like her?
-I don't even know her.
Well, she's an idiot.
You couldn't lie if your life depended on it.
-And, you know, I was telling the truth when I said that I'm really happy the way it turned out.
