After his wife's death and the collapse of his newspaper, David Harwood has no choice but to uproot his nine-year-old son and move back into his childhood home in Promise Falls, New York. David believes his life is in free fall, and he can't find a way to stop his descent. Then he comes across a family secret of epic proportions. A year after a devastating miscarriage, David's cousin Marla has continued to struggle. But when David's mother asks him to check on her, he's horrified to discover that she's been secretly raising a child who is not her own--a baby she claims was a gift from an "angel" left on her porch. When the baby's real mother is found murdered, David can't help wanting to piece together what happened--even if it means proving his own cousin's guilt. But as he uncovers each piece of evidence, David realizes that Marla's mysterious child is just the tip of the iceberg. Other strange things are happening. Animals are found ritually slaughtered. An ominous abandoned Ferris wheel seems to stand as a warning that something dark has infected Promise Falls. And someone has decided that the entire town must pay for the sins of its past... in blood.

Best book I've read in half a year or so. The plot started early on, and as the book went on, things only got more interesting. The only negative about it is that not everything was answered at the end. We got closure with the "main" mystery, but not with the side stories. The book is the first part of a trilogy, so that answers that. I can't wait to read book no.2 to see if it's as good as this one.

I like his writing style and it was a good story. Just wish I'd have known it was continued in the next book. Actually just found out it is a trilogy. Hope I can find book 2 and 3 before I forget this one.

This is by far the funnest book I have read in a long time. Just when I'm beginning to think that this small town can't get any weirder something crazier pops up. I have to rack my brain to remember the characters are as I begin reading each chapter and it features a character that was introduced earlier in the story. There are a lot of characters and I find them all fascinating. I'm reading the second in the trilogy and I cannot wait to get into the third. I highly recommend the Promise Falls trilogy.

I simply cannot say enough good things about this Canadian author. I love good mystery stories and I am always on the hunt for a new author to enjoy. His books are bad for me because I ignore everything for a good while and stay up too late because I just cannot stop reading. Give him a try, I think you'll enjoy his stories.

One of my favourite authors and although many of his novels are stand alone books, this start of a thrilling trilogy will keep you on the edge of your seat!
