Super cute book with colourful illustrations.

I could tell right away that this book's illustrator was white, because of his unfortunate portrayal of a Black child. The part that stands out to me as particularly hard to read is the spread that begins, "Even when I look a mess..." and depicts the young girl in bed with her hair caricatured into what looks like an afro (the hairstyle shown in this illustration is a marked difference from the dreadlocks that the main character was wearing before). The implication that Black girls' natural hair is inherently "a mess" is racist and deeply damaging; it regurgitates dominant cultural norms that devalues Black people's bodies and pressures them to conform to white standards of beauty. As a non-Black person of color, I wanted to be sure that my dismay wasn't misguided -- but found that another reviewer also found this book offensive: https://colorfulbookreviews.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/board-book-review-i-like-myself/

Here's a great example of why #ownvoices stories are so crucial. Sometimes, white children's book authors portray Black children with respect and celebration (such as Ezra Jack Keats, in my opinion). But too often, biases show up on the page and do no justice to Black children's brilliance and lives.

My two kids (now tween/teen) loved this book when they were little, and I still do! I am so glad they got to read its message when they were young. Unlike many "message" books, this makes you want to read it for all the things it offers in addition to the message. The book will have the kids laughing, wanting to study the pictures, and enjoying the flow of the rhyme. The illustrations are brimming with humor, creativity, and life. They give the main character & her dog so much...well, character.

This is the type of book that should be in every waiting room & children's collection.

It will be enjoyed by kids & also lighten the heart of any lucky adult getting to read it with them. I even gave it as a gift to a friend who didn't have kids...it's message, humor, and artwork will tickle and lighten both young and older hearts.

Contrary to what one might think from the School Library Journal review, it's not that her *dog* still likes her...it's that *she* still likes herself. The great thing about this book is that her sense of worth isn't dependent on any outside sources. Her dog's skeptical and surprised looks when she dons "a silly snout that snorts," "purple polka-dotted lips," and "spikes all down [her] spine, or hair that's like a porcupine," don't phase her any more than the stares or teasing by other people earlier in the book. The book shows how great it can be to be around someone who doesn't let outside negative opinions dampen her enjoyment of life....her dog has a great time with her because of that, and we do, too!

This book can offer a positive, empowering template for those times we all experience outside judgement. We may not always be able to let the negativity bounce off us, but it is empowering to realize that can sometimes be an option, and that can feel great.

This book is great in developing the idea to like one self regardless of appearance of what others may think. My 3 year old girl loves it, and quotes it. Its very well written and a must for young girls.
