In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick wall—until Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.

Only different.

The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever.

Coraline is an extraordinary fairy tale/nightmare from the uniquely skewed imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

Terrifying, absolutely terrifying. Book or Movie, Coraline is not for children as it’s dark themes consist of bringing children’s nightmares come to life after the main protagonist finds herself in a parallel world where all seems well but in reality it’s truly demonic. However I will admit the story gives readers a lesson worth learning about which is essentially, be careful what you wish for. If you are a fan of twisted stories then I highly recommend Coraline for you but please do not read this to a child. Aside from horror the book does present some issues a child might actually go through like not having the best family life for example however in the end all is well and although I’m giving this book a low rating it is worth the read, I’m just not a fan of horror is all. 1 star

When Coraline and her family move into a new house, she can't wait to explore every part of it. But then, her mother says: Never under any circumstances open the door in the living room.

I really like reading books by Neil Gaiman. This book is no exception. Coraline is a great Fantasy book about a girl who thinks she wants life to be better but realizes she is really happy with her parents the way they are. Her other Mother and other Father are not really what she wants. Neil Gaiman uses a lot of fantasy details to tell the story of Coraline, who turns out to be a brave girl who must fight to change things back to the way they were and save her real parents. I recommend this book and also the movie. If you see the movie first then the book goes into more detail. I think then the book is more enjoyable because you can visualize Coraline and the other characters in the story.

Love the story, I just kind of spoiled the experience of reading the book by first watching the movie several time, then reading the graphic novel over and over, and then watching youtube theory videos on the story before I even got to the book. Watch the movie once, then read the book. You'll be delighted with the amount of detail that's in this thing.

I have a low tolerance for violence. I produce enough anxiety all on my own without needing the adrenaline shock of a horror story, After reading most of Gaiman's other novels, I decided to give Coraline a try. I'm glad I did. It's not full of "blood and guts" like I worried it would be. Instead, it's more like a fairy tale/psychological thriller. Gaiman knows how to get inside character's minds, making the fantastical seem real and relatable. Coraline is a brave girl and a great role model. I especially recommend listening to the audiobook, narrated by Gaiman himself.

4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy creepy stories with brave characters for children.

When Coraline moves into a new house she quickly figures out that some doors are better left locked. But is life more exciting on the other side? When her parents go missing it is up to her to find them and bring them back. Can she be brave enough to face her fears and save them?

Even though creepy themes are not my favorite by nature, I adored the reason that Gaiman wrote this book, and of course the writing style. I liked seeing how his mind translated into a children's story and a children's character. I liked how it focused on bravery and courage.

Fantasy isn't my favorite genre, so my rating is perhaps a bit unfair. I can see how this book would appeal to young readers by being creepy and scary without going over the top.

I have a hard time believeing this is a children's book (or movie) because I find it haunting and terrifying. I first read it a couple years ago and it was just as creepy reading it again.

"I don't WANT whatever I want. Nobody does. Not really. What kind of fun would it be if I just got everything I ever wanted?"

Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.
