The comments are all muddled. This is the PBS documentary, not the Steve McQueen film.
I hope it is accurate and helps set the record straight: Stalag Luft 3 was a camp for British Commonwealth prisoners. So there were no American prisoners there. Several of the "starring roles" played by the big-name American actors in the movie were, in real life, very brave and clever Canadians.

🎖 Allied POWs plot a mass breakout from prison camp. Note that this was not a "concentration camp," military POWs were generally treated according to the Geneva conventions. As they explain during the movie, it's an officer's duty to try to escape, so they go in grand style. Beautifully photographed in Panavision, the premiere widescreen system of the day, on location in Germany. The excitement never stops, the cast is outstanding, and the Elmer Bernstein score will have you ready to climb in the tunnel. So, the Observer says, check it out.

Nazi Germany has a problem with escaping POW's. The solution? build a high-security camp and send all the troublesome prisoners there. Doing this, the Third Reich has unwittingly created the most determined escape team in Germany. A plan is quickly laid out to dig three tunnels to escape Germany, while also drawing forces away from the front lines. I absolutely loved this film, the acting is great and the plot is better, somehow making a uplifting statement in the cruel events. Plus its original and has no cheesy romance stuffed in it. Be warned, it is very long. Definitely recommend to any boy. 5/5. @mittopic of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

This film does not hold up well over time. I found at times it lay on the brink of being just another episode of Hogan's Heroes. It's just a little too clean. Probably a good, safe watch for the senior's crowd.

Couldn't wait to see this classic movie but it was unwatchable due to being in widescreen which literally only showed on a slim black bar in the middle of the TV screen. Need a fullscreen version so I can actually see the movie!

After watching the movie produced over 50 years ago I realized that there were no leading characters that made the movie great. It was the story of the escape and how each person played a particular role. Many of the actors that were lesser known in the early 60"s went on and developed wonderful acting careers. I was in my 3rd year of college when I saw the movie the first time and it was a reminder how much things have changed. I found it slow and to sit and watch it for close to 3 hours was a challenge for me.

This is one of the all-time great war movies, a POW adventure from director John Sturges that celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Allied forces even when their backs were to the wall.

Classic film! It used to come on television about once a year. It was a family favorite. Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson - if anyone is going to breakout of a Nazi prison camp - you know those guys will. Still a great film if you haven't watched it lately. I recently borrowed a DVD from SPL, also called The Great Escape. It was a PBS show about the escape and it followed some archaeologists who were excavating one of the tunnels in the film. It also interviewed a couple of guys who were imprisoned there. Gives you some inside info about their escape and how they did it. The Luftwaffe built the prison camp for downed Allied airmen and they chose the location of the site because it was on particularly sandy soil - they hoped it would deter tunneling attempts, so the details about the tunneling process was really interesting! Be sure to check out both for great viewing.
