The "About the author" text in the catalog listing does not appear trustworthy. Rushdie has, in interviews, and elsewhere, described growing up in Mumbai, then Bombay. Mumbai is not in Pakistan. It is in India. Sigh.

Wow! Rushdie is a fantastic wordsmith. His characters are so real, even when completely imaginary. Each of them is a totem for a particular philosophy or way of life that Rushdie wants to describe. Yet none of them is a perfect model, as…

Made it to page 300 and then DNF. Just didn't care what happened.

Page 277 was the last one I read. I hardly quit a book when I commit to reading it, but Satanic Versis didn't impress me a bit. Could not follow the logic or storyline.

I'm really glad that Rushdie survived and is feeling better. I tried to get into The Satanic Verses but couldn't, as before. I never liked that style of writing. I don't think it's blasphemous though. On the contrary, the fact that there…

In light of recent events, I've finally decided to read this novel.

Only a writer of Rushdie's stature would attempt a novel with such a fantastic theme. I tried at times to imagine what the original draft must have looked like. Also there is no doubt a reader would be well served having a basic…

An overrated, average novel with a few different, very loosely interconnected faith based stories. I didn't recognize the cause of all the controversy surrounding this book, and I don't think enough of it to recommend it, unless curiosity…

So random. Probably not worth the hype/controversy imo. Maybe it was just above my head, I don’t know. I’m not sure who this would resonate with... perhaps an Indian (or other person from a place with a similar background) who is…

it is said that freedom of expression is a non-negotiable principle. but what limits, if any, should be placed on this freedom when it is used to criticize if not demonize a minority religious community? the novel is a good literary piece…

A novel, strewn, with a wealth of knowledge, and airs with super human complexities. Deities, that conspicuously, yet consciously dwell in us humans albeit unraveling what is beyond-- and majestically unfolding our innate, un-imaginable…

I found this book exhilarating, thoughtful, charming - a wonderful read. Yes, it's often fantastical, symbolic, and esoteric, so perhaps difficult for some. But, from the beginning, I heard the author's voice in my head with its Indian…

One of the most worthless & boring books that I have ever read. I picked this up to find out what the halabaloo about it was all about. I can only say that it is terribly overrated; and I just don't understand why it should be listed…

It is rare that I don't finish a book that I have started. After the first chapter and a few pages later, I packed it in. Too difficult to get into. I don't know how all those people who banned the book were able to get through the…

That this story fails to live up to the hype is so unsurprising that it barely deserves mention. The prose is beautiful, and there are ideas in this story enough to fill three or four lesser works. And I think that is the problem. I do not…

Waste of time to read this book. Pompous words in paragraph long sentences which never get to the point and are senseless. What was the philosophy of the writer? That evil is humanized through rage and hatred? If it hadn't been for the…

After all the hype, I was underwhelmed. I guess if I had never read Garcia Marquez , it would seem innovative. The novel is utilizes the magic realism developed by Spanish American writers. To me, it borrowed so heavily from that…
