I initially felt this book was tedious to read, but became absorbed by the story and characters after a few chapters. While this short novel is not as good as Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, it is better than The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories. I recommend this book as an engrossing and quick read.I initially felt this book was tedious to read, but became absorbed by the story and characters after a few chapters. A very interesting look and interpretation of human history. Somewhat dry at times to read, but well worth it.

A poorly written stream of consciousness that was terribly edited, so I didn't bother to finish reading it. The best thing I can say about this book is that some of his life experiences were interesting, but not enough to continue with it.

A somewhat interesting, if not particularly well written, look at the so called 'golden age' of comedy. It provides some insight into the early careers of well known, and lesser well known, comics who came up during the 1970's, as well as the rise and fall of the once famous Comedy Store and it's owner, Mitzi Shore.A somewhat interesting, if not particularly well written, look at the so called 'golden age' of comedy. An overrated, average novel with a few different, very loosely interconnected faith based stories. I didn't recognize the cause of all the controversy surrounding this book, and I don't think enough of it to recommend it, unless curiosity also compels someone to read it.An overrated, average novel with a few different, very loosely interconnected faith based stories. An interesting biography of a man who overcomes his personal and physical challenges in order to successfully navigate his own life. His positive attitude is an inspiration for those who are dealing with their own challenges and struggling to find a reason to keep trying. An interesting biography of a man who overcomes his personal and physical challenges in order to successfully navigate his own life. This novel gave some interesting insight into the intersections of competitive sports and gender fluidity and identity. There’s something to be learned from this biography if one can overcome the narcissistic and self congratulatory tones of the author. This novel gave some interesting insight into the intersections of competitive sports and gender fluidity and identity. This novel was difficult to read at times; not just due to the meandering side stories that add nothing to the overall tale other than to make it twice as long as necessary, but due to the conflicting treatment of the whale. Melville wrote so passionately and in depth of the whale and the study of cetology, but than contradicted his passion with the glorifying of the hunting, torturing, and killing of the whale for profit. 19th century attitudes and understanding aside, this was an overly long and fairly boring book both in 1851 and today. This novel was difficult to read at times; not just due to the meandering side stories that add nothing to the overall tale other than to make it twice as long as necessary, but due to the conflicting treatment of the whale. An excellent tale that is as entertaining as it is quick to read. This modern day fairy tale is suitable for adults and children alike, and the hand drawn illustrations from various children adds to the quaintness of this cute story. This book was very average, and not to the standard of the author's A Song of Ice and Fire series. This novel lacked the interest and excitement of Martin's famous series, and was rather boring to read.
